What is Six Month Smiles?

Have you considered orthodontic or teeth straightening treatment but been put off by the prospect of wearing braces or aligners every day for up to three years? Now there is an answer for those wanting a quick fix for their crooked smile – the revolutionary 6-Month Smiles treatment.

Six-Month Smiles can be used to treat a wide variety of orthodontic complaints, including:

· Crowding - teeth are too close together

· Spacing - gaps between teeth

· Overbite - teeth overlap too much

· Overjet - front teeth stick out

· Underbite - lower teeth stick out

· Crossbite - teeth bite the opposite side

What are the benefits?
 
The main benefits of the 6-Month Smiles system are: · The wires are discreet and tooth-coloured.

How long does it take?

The treatment takes on average 5—12 months.  The length of your treatment will be determined by the complexity of your individual case.

What does the treatment involve? During your first visit, you will be fully assessed and your dentist will take some photographs, X-rays and examine your smile. Your dentist will also give you an indication as to whether the 6-Month Smiles treatment is suitable for you and the likely treatment time and costs involved.

On your second visit, 3 weeks later, you will be fitted with the special 6-Month Smiles braces, which are small, white brackets, and special wires that come directly from the 6-Month Smiles laboratory in the United States.

After your first fitting, you will visit your dentist every 4-5 weeks for 45minute—1 hour appointments for regular adjustments of your braces until the end of your treatment.

Does it hurt?

Like any orthodontic treatment, there will be some discomfort when you start the treatment, but over time you will become accustomed to it. What sets the 6-Month Smiles braces apart is that they use low force to move teeth more comfortably. 6-Month Braces utilise standard orthodontic mechanics, but with an emphasis on the cosmetic appearance of your teeth rather than the position of your bite. It may be advisable to take some mild painkillers such as ibuprofen or paracetamol during the first few days of your treatment. 

How much does it cost?

Six Month Smiles treatment at Birchfield Dental Practice starts from £2,000 per arch.

This can be spread over 6-12 months interest free (subject to status)

Do you worry about bad breath?

Here are a few helpful tips to ensure your breath stays as fresh as possible at all times!

1. Change your toothbrush
We recommend a new toothbrush at least every 3 months.  Bacteria build up on toothbrushes and using a worn out toothbrush will not only be less effective at removing those 'bad breath' causing bugs but it may actually increase their numbers in your mouth!

2. Scrape your Tongue
Using a tongue scraper/tongue cleaner can dramatically improve your oral health and consequently your breath.  Bacteria accumulate on the tongue and can cause bad breath.  By using a tongue cleaner everyday you will minimise the bacteria and improve your breath!

3. Stay hydrated
Good hydration helps improve saliva production which is your body natural defence against bad breath causing bacteria.  As well as the many health benefits drinking more water will go along way to improving your breath.

4. Floss Regularly
By flossing or using inter-dental brushes you will remove the bacteria between the teeth where you toothbrush can't reach thus reducing the number of bacteria and therefore making your breath fresher!

5. Chew Gum
Sugar free chewing gum is a great way to keep your breath fresh and may also help keep your teeth healthy.  Chewing gum stimulates saliva production which helps protect the teeth from bacteria.

6. Mouthwash
Using a mouthwash can help with bad breath, there are a number of specialist products on the market that are specifically aimed at improving bad breath.  Be careful to avoid those containing alcohol.

7. See your Hygienist
Regular hygiene visits and following your hygienists advice is the best defence against bad breath and will definitely keep your breath fresher!
